NATCA Raises Alarm Over Air Traffic Controller Shortage

NATCA Raises Alarm Over Air Traffic Controller Shortage
Reported by David Joshua — Sele Media Africa | www.selemedia.org

The National Air Traffic Controllers Association (NATCA) has issued a sharp warning that the United States is facing a critical shortage of fully certified air traffic controllers, posing serious risks to aviation safety and efficiency. [1]

According to NATCA, the current staffing gap is estimated at 3,000 to 3,800 controllers below required levels. [2] Controllers now frequently work mandatory overtime—10‑hour days, every six days—operating with decades‑old equipment and systems that have long exceeded their intended lifespan. [3]

The union states that inadequate staffing not only undermines airspace capacity but also elevates fatigue and health risks among controllers, threatening the safe movement of flights across the National Airspace System. [4]

NATCA now urges federal policymakers and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to implement a comprehensive five‑year hiring and training plan, upgrade outdated infrastructure, and improve working conditions to safeguard both controllers and the flying public.
As delays and operational disruptions continue to make headlines, NATCA’s alert highlights the precarious state of the system—and the urgency for swift action.
