The Jigawa State Command of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) has announced the rescue of 221 victims of human trafficking over the past two years.
Speaking to journalists in Dutse, NAPTIP State Commander Amina Abdulrahman said the victims—mostly women and children—were intercepted while being trafficked to various destinations within and outside Nigeria.
“Our operations have disrupted multiple trafficking routes. Many of the rescued victims were lured with fake job offers, marriage promises, or deceptive travel arrangements,” she said.
Key Details:
- The victims were rescued between 2023 and 2025 during joint operations with security agencies and local vigilante groups.
- NAPTIP is currently providing shelter, counseling, and reintegration support for the rescued individuals.
- The agency is also prosecuting several suspects linked to trafficking rings operating in the region.
Why It Matters:
Human trafficking remains a major challenge in northern Nigeria, with Jigawa identified as a key transit and source state. The rescue of over 200 victims highlights both the scale of the crisis and the need for continued public awareness, surveillance, and legal enforcement.
