NAFDAC Withdraws, Suspends, Cancels 101 Drug Products — Public Advised to Comply!
Reported by David Joshua | Sele Media Africa
The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has officially released a list of 101 pharmaceutical products whose Certificates of Registration have been withdrawn, suspended, or cancelled, effective immediately. These products may no longer be manufactured, imported, advertised, distributed, sold or used in Nigeria. The list is published on the agency’s website. [1]
What the Action Involves & Why
- The move covers a wide variety of dosage forms including tablets, injections, eye drops, syrups, and combination formulations. [1]
- The affected products include treatments for conditions such as HIV (e.g. Abacavir/Lamivudine), antimalarials (e.g. Artemether/Lumefantrine), antibiotics, and other drug classes. [1]
- NAFDAC describes the withdrawals as necessary because some products no longer meet regulatory requirements, while others have their marketing authorization terminated or voluntarily withdrawn by the Marketing Authorization Holders (MAHs). [1]
- The agency instructs all stakeholders—manufacturers, importers, distributors, retailers, health practitioners, and consumers —to cease handling these products and immediately pull them from circulation. [1] Implications & Public Safety
- Patients currently using any of the delisted products are urged to consult their healthcare providers to obtain medically safe alternatives.
- Use of any of the withdrawn or suspended products may carry legal risks, as they are no longer authorized.
- The action underscores ongoing efforts by NAFDAC to crack down on substandard, falsified, or unregulated pharmaceutical products in Nigeria’s market.
- In earlier enforcement actions, NAFDAC shut down over 11,000 drug shops and seized expired, counterfeit, and unregistered medicines across major markets nationwide. [2]
