Mandilas Fire: Lagos Govt Orders Removal of Illegal Stalls, Extensions Or Face Demolition
Lagos — Following the recent devastating fire at Mandilas Plaza on Lagos Island, the Lagos State Government has issued a firm directive: all illegal stalls, shop extensions, and structures obstructing access routes must be removed by the end of today or risk demolition. The fire at Mandilas was traced to a generating set placed illegally within the building complex. Although no lives were lost, the blaze caused properties worth millions of naira to be destroyed. Emergency responders were hampered in their operations because illegal structures blocked access to Mandilas Plaza. Gbolahan Oki, Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA), addressed traders, warning that non‐compliance would lead to immediate demolition. Governor Babajide Sanwo‑Olu, speaking at the Lagos International Fire Safety Conference, reiterated that the government has made serious investments in fire safety infrastructure, including building more fire stations and acquiring modern firefighting equipment.
What This Means
The government’s action shows a zero‑tolerance stance toward illegal extensions that compromise safety and exacerbate fire risk. Traders and business owners at Mandilas and adjacent areas are being forced to clear illegal structures immediately, or face demolition of those structures. These measures are part of a broader effort by the Lagos State Government to improve emergency access, reduce risk, and ensure safer urban spaces.
