Malawi’s Ex‑President Clinches Comeback Victory at Age 85
Lilongwe — In a dramatic political return, former President Peter Mutharika has won the 2025 presidential election in Malawi, ousting incumbent Lazarus Chakwera and reclaiming the presidency at age 85. Mutharika captured 56.8 percent of the vote, while Chakwera secured around 33 percent, according to official results announced by the Malawi Electoral Commission. [1]
Chakwera conceded defeat hours before the final result was announced, congratulating Mutharika in a televised address and pledging a peaceful transition. [2] Supporters of Mutharika had already begun celebrating in the commercial capital, Blantyre, following earlier projections of his lead. [3]
Mutharika previously served as president from 2014 to 2020. His return marks a dramatic reversal of fortune after losing power following a court‑mandated rerun in 2020, which Chakwera won. [4] His campaign centered heavily on promises to stabilize the faltering economy, which in recent years faced soaring inflation, fuel shortages, and increasing public discontent. As he prepares to lead again, Mutharika faces the challenging task of reviving public trust and managing deep structural issues that have persisted under previous administrations.
