Reported by Marian Opeyemi Fasesan | Sele Media Africa
The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has intensified its enforcement operations against indiscriminate refuse disposal across the state, in a bid to curb environmental violations and protect public health.
“We’re committed to a cleaner Lagos, and defaulters will be prosecuted,” said LAWMA Managing Director, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin.
Key Measures:
- Increased deployment of monitoring teams in high-risk areas.
- Prosecution of individuals and businesses violating waste regulations.
- Community sensitisation campaigns on proper waste handling.
Why It Matters:
- Indiscriminate dumping contributes to flooding, disease outbreaks, and urban blight.
- Lagos generates over 13,000 metric tonnes of waste daily—effective management is vital.
- The cleanup aligns with Governor Sanwo-Olu’s THEMES+ agenda on environmental sustainability.
What to Watch:
- Number of arrests and fines issued.
- Public response and compliance rates.
- Expansion of PSP (Private Sector Participation) waste services to underserved communities.
