LASTMA Deploys UAVs to Manage Traffic in Lagos
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has introduced the use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), commonly known as drones, to enhance traffic management across Lagos State. This innovative move aims to tackle persistent traffic congestion and improve real-time monitoring of road networks.
LASTMA officials explained that the deployment of UAVs will enable more effective surveillance of traffic hotspots, accidents, and road obstructions. The aerial perspective provides quick data and visuals, allowing traffic officers to respond promptly and coordinate better traffic flow.
The use of drones is expected to supplement existing traffic management technologies, including CCTV cameras and traffic sensors, by offering a more flexible and comprehensive monitoring tool. This initiative also aligns with Lagos State’s broader Smart City vision, incorporating modern technology to solve urban challenges.
Authorities assured residents that the UAVs will operate within privacy and safety regulations and that data collected will be used solely for traffic management purposes.
