Lagos State Disburses ₦1.5 Billion to 742 Retirees, Pensioners Commend Prompt Payment
The Lagos State Government has disbursed a total of ₦1.5 billion to 742 retirees from the state’s public service, reaffirming its commitment to the welfare of pensioners. This disbursement was announced during the 109th Batch Retirement Benefit Bond Certificates Presentation Ceremony held at NECA House in Lagos.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, represented by the Head of Service, Mr. Bode Agoro, emphasized the administration’s dedication to ensuring that retirees receive their entitlements promptly. He noted that since May 2019, the state has paid over ₦70.9 billion in accrued pension rights to 20,956 retirees across various sectors, including the mainstream civil service, local governments, the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), and the Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM) [1] .
Pensioners present at the ceremony expressed gratitude for the timely payments. Many highlighted the positive impact of the funds on their post-retirement lives, enabling them to meet personal and family obligations without undue stress.
The Lagos State Pension Commission (LASPEC) reiterated its commitment to maintaining transparency and efficiency in pension administration. The commission assured retirees that the government would continue to prioritize their welfare, ensuring that all due benefits are disbursed without delay.
This latest disbursement aligns with the state government’s broader strategy to clear pension arrears and implement a “Pay-As-You-Go” model, aiming to eliminate backlogs and foster a more sustainable pension system [2] .
