Lagos Residents Lament Irregular Waste Collection!
Reported by Marian Opeyemi Fasesan | Sele Media Africa
Residents across several communities in Lagos State have raised alarm over worsening irregularities in waste collection services, blaming Private Sector Participant (PSP) operators for the piling refuse in streets and gutters.
Many say missed pick-up schedules and poor communication by operators are contributing to indiscriminate dumping, especially in densely populated areas like Mushin, Agege, Ajegunle, and parts of Ikeja.
“The waste trucks no longer come regularly. We’re forced to dump trash in open spaces. It’s unhealthy,” said a resident in Ojota.
Key Details:
- The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has warned operators over poor performance in recent months.
- Overflowing bins and roadside waste are increasing in both low-income and mid-income areas.
- Some residents now resort to burning waste, raising air quality concerns.
Why It Matters:
- Poor sanitation increases the risk of disease outbreaks such as cholera, especially with ongoing flooding in some parts of the state.
- The situation undermines Lagos’ megacity environmental goals.
- Waste mismanagement has knock-on effects on drainage, traffic, and public hygiene.
What to Watch:
Possible sanctions or contract reviews by LAWMA.
- Community-based waste initiatives gaining traction.
- Policy push for more sustainable waste management solutions in Lagos.
