LAGOS LG UNVEILS NUTRITION PROGRAMME TO TACKLE CHILD MALNUTRITION

Lagos, Nigeria — In a strategic effort to combat child malnutrition at the grassroots level, Alimosho Local Government in Lagos State has launched a community‑based nutrition programme aimed at supporting children aged 0–5 years through nutritional screening, caregiver education, and direct support services. The initiative, flagged off on Tuesday by the Alimosho Local Government Executive Chairman, Mr. Johnson Akinpelu, seeks to address the persistent challenge of undernutrition among the most vulnerable age group in the community. Akinpelu described the programme as a timely and impactful response to pressing child health issues, emphasizing the long‑term benefits for child growth, survival, and development.
According to the programme design, approximately 120 children and their caregivers from District I of Alimosho will benefit directly from the services, which include nutritional screenings to identify at‑risk children, nutritional support, education sessions for caregivers on healthy feeding practices, and referrals when necessary. The nutrition drive is implemented in collaboration with key partners, notably the Health Emergency Initiative (HEI) and the Nigerian Exchange Group (NGX Group), in line with broader efforts to strengthen child health outcomes in underserved communities across Lagos State.
This local government intervention builds on ongoing social impact initiatives already extended to communities such as Yaba and Ajegunle under the Project BLOOM (Bringing Life to Our Overlooked Minors) framework, which has provided medical screening, nutritional support and caregiver education to hundreds of children and their families, with follow‑up care planned to monitor recovery progress. Officials reaffirmed that the programme aligns with Lagos State’s commitment to early detection, prevention, and effective management of malnutrition, reinforcing local and state‑level strategies to improve child health and reduce preventable mortality associated with under‑nutrition.
