Lagos — The Lagos State Government has expressed regret to residents affected by Tuesday’s sudden flash floods and attributed the flooding to heavy rainfall, tidal lock, and illegal constructions blocking waterways. [1]
What the Government Says:
- Commissioner for environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, in a statement on X (formerly Twitter), extended sympathy to affected residents, acknowledging the disruptions and discomfort caused. [1]
- Wahab explained that Lagos’s coastal geography makes it naturally prone to flooding during intense rains, particularly when high tides (tidal lock) inhibit stormwater drainage. [1]
- He singled out illegal structures on flood plains and dumping of refuse in drainage channels as major aggravating factors. These violations, he said, obstruct water flow and worsen flooding impacts. [2]
- In some areas (such as Kusenla), technical issues contribute to flooding: downstream elevations are higher than drainage inverts, complicating water discharge. A pumping station is part of the remediation plan. [2]
– The Commissioner warned that illegal structures and obstructions will be removed without delay under state environmental laws.
- He appealed to the public to assist by:
- Avoiding the dumping of waste in drains
- Refraining from building on floodplains
- Allowing regular desilting and clearing of drainage systems [1]
- Wahab reaffirmed Lagos State’s commitment to strengthen existing drainage and flood control infrastructure. [1]
