The Lagos State Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Hon. Mobolaji Ogunlende, has called on Nigerian youths to play a leading role in driving the country’s digital transformation, stressing that their energy, creativity, and tech-savviness position them as the vanguard of Nigeria’s digital future.
Speaking during a youth engagement forum held in Ikeja, Ogunlende emphasized that the youth demographic must go beyond being digital consumers to becoming creators, innovators, and problem-solvers within the tech ecosystem.
“Digital transformation is not just a government agenda—it’s a youth agenda. We must build with our own hands the tech future we want to live in,” the commissioner declared.
Key Points:
- Ogunlende cited Lagos’ recent investments in innovation hubs, coding academies, and tech training initiatives aimed at empowering young people.
- He urged youths to leverage platforms in artificial intelligence, data science, fintech, and green tech to solve national challenges.
- The Commissioner also stressed the need for ethical innovation and inclusive tech access for underserved communities.
Why It Matters:
Nigeria has one of the youngest populations in the world, with over 60% under the age of 25. Mobilizing this group for digital development is critical to achieving economic resilience.
- Lagos remains Nigeria’s innovation nerve centre and is home to several tech unicorns including Paystack and Flutterwave.
- Digital inclusion is key to addressing youth unemployment and closing education and infrastructure gaps.
What to Watch:
- Upcoming youth-targeted digital upskilling programs backed by the Lagos State Government.
- Private sector partnerships for funding youth-led startups and community innovation centres.
- National alignment with the Nigeria Digital Economy Policy and Strategy (2020–2030).
