Kwara Leaders Pay Tribute to Veteran Journalist Emmanuel Olayiwola Olanrewaju
Ilorin, Nigeria Kwara State’s political and media communities are mourning the passing of Emmanuel Olayiwola Olanrewaju, a veteran journalist and former chair of the Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in Kwara State. The esteemed Kwara State correspondent for The Sun Newspapers died on the morning of Friday, February 13, 2026, following a brief illness at the age of 67, leaving behind decades of service to journalism and press advocacy.
In an official statement, Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq described Olanrewaju as a “veteran media professional and unionist whose legacy spans decades of excellent reporting and commitment to the welfare of fellow journalists.” The governor highlighted the late correspondent’s unwavering dedication to journalistic excellence and his efforts in advancing the welfare of media practitioners in Kwara State.
Former Senate President Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki expressed deep sorrow, calling Olanrewaju’s death “shocking and painful” and “a great loss to the media profession in Kwara State and beyond.” Saraki praised the journalist’s professionalism, integrity, and significant contributions to the growth of journalism in the region, extending condolences to his family, the Correspondents’ Chapel, the NUJ Kwara State Council, and the wider media fraternity.
Leaders within the NUJ and fellow media practitioners also honored Olanrewaju’s legacy, recalling his leadership during union activities and his inclusive approach to newsroom collaboration. The Correspondents’ Chapel remembered him as a unifying figure whose guidance shaped the careers of many journalists across the state.
Olanrewaju’s passing represents a somber moment for press freedom advocates and the journalism community in Kwara State. His decades long career exemplified a steadfast commitment to truth, ethical reporting, and the strengthening of media institutions at both state and national levels.
