ERUKU, KWARA STATE —Days after a deadly bandit attack, the Christ Apostolic Church (CAC) Oke Isegun, Eruku, held a solemn service on Sunday inside its blood-stained auditorium, praying for the safe return of 38 abducted worshippers and for the repose of souls lost during the violent assault. The church leadership officially confirmed that 38 members were kidnapped in the Tuesday night attack, revising earlier conflicting reports that had circulated on social media.
Church Response
According to church elders and local officials, the attack occurred during a late-evening worship service when heavily armed assailants stormed the premises, shooting sporadically and seizing congregants. “It was a night of horror. We lost lives, and many were taken. But our faith stands. We will not stop praying until they return safely,” said a senior church leader during Sunday’s service. The Attack Eyewitnesses reported that the attackers arrived on motorcycles and operated for over an hour unchallenged. Several worshippers were injured, and at least three deaths have been unofficially reported, though state authorities have yet to confirm casualties.
Security Reaction
The Kwara State Police Command confirmed the incident but has not yet released a full statement on the status of the kidnapped victims. Community-based vigilante groups and security agencies have reportedly begun search operations in the surrounding forests.
National Outcry
The incident has sparked outrage, with several religious leaders and civil society organisations calling on the federal government to intensify security in churches and rural communities. Human rights advocates have described the attack as yet another example of Nigeria’s worsening internal security crisis, especially in regions previously considered safe from mass abductions.
