Killings: 130 Pan-Yoruba Groups Petition UN Secretary-General, Warn of ‘Looming Genocide’!

A coalition of 130 Pan-Yoruba organisations has submitted a formal petition to the United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres, raising the alarm over what they describe as “a looming genocide” against the Yoruba people in Nigeria’s South-West region.
In the petition dated September 30, 2025, the coalition accused the Nigerian government of failing to adequately protect Yoruba communities from what they termed sustained attacks by suspected bandits, kidnappers, and terrorists. The groups claim that hundreds of lives have been lost in recent months due to killings, abductions, and widespread insecurity in the region.
The letter, co-signed by leaders of various socio-cultural and self-determination groups, called on the UN to investigate the alleged crimes, monitor the situation closely, and intervene diplomatically to prevent further loss of life.
“This is not just a security breakdown; it is an existential threat,” the petition read. “Our people are being killed, displaced, and terrorised daily. If urgent action is not taken, what is unfolding could escalate into full-blown genocide.”
The petition also demanded international monitoring of Nigeria’s internal security operations and an independent inquiry into the reported atrocities.
The UN has yet to issue an official response.
