Kenya to Host First-Ever African Grammy-Inspired Awards with 8.5 Million Prize Pool

In a groundbreaking move set to redefine Africa’s entertainment landscape, Kenya has announced plans to host its own version of the Grammy Awards, becoming the first African country to do so.

The historic awards, aimed at celebrating and financially rewarding African artists, will feature a staggering 8.5 million prize pool — a massive shift from the traditional practice of handing out trophies without monetary compensation.

According to reports, the initiative is being championed by President William Ruto’s administration, as part of efforts to promote Africa’s cultural and creative industries on a global scale. Sources within Kenya’s Ministry of Youth Affairs, Sports, and the Arts say planning is already underway for the award ceremony, which will focus on recognizing excellence in music, arts, and entertainment across the continent.

“This will not be a symbolic award. Artists will go home with substantial financial rewards, not just plaques,” a Kenyan official stated during a recent press briefing in Nairobi.

The upcoming awards are expected to feature categories that reflect the diversity of African music — including Afrobeats, Bongo Flava, Amapiano, Highlife, and more — with submissions open to artists from across the continent.

A Step Towards Cultural Independence
Industry stakeholders have applauded Kenya’s bold move, saying it’s long overdue for Africa to take control of how it celebrates its own. For decades, African artists have aspired to win Western awards like the Grammys, BETs, or MTVs, with very few platforms of similar prestige emerging from the continent itself.

“It’s time for Africa to stop looking west for validation. We have the talent, the audience, and now — the leadership willing to invest in that vision,” said Nigerian producer and cultural critic, Adewale Banks.

Moral Lesson:
This initiative shows visionary leadership and cultural pride. As President William Ruto earns praise across Africa, many are calling for other African nations to follow suit and build systems that uplift their own.

Sele Media Africa will continue to follow updates on the event and provide details on artist nominations, event dates, and how countries across Africa can participate.
