Abba Kabir Yusuf has called on the Federal Government to urgently provide modern firefighting equipment following a fresh blaze at the Gidan Gilas section of the Singer Market in Kano.
The governor made the appeal during an on-the-spot assessment of the market after the latest fire incident the second reported outbreak at the commercial hub. Yusuf stressed that enhanced federal intervention is critical to strengthening emergency response capacity and preventing recurring market fires across the state.
According to the governor, the incident underscores the urgent need for advanced firefighting infrastructure, including modern fire trucks, rapid-response tools, and improved safety systems in major markets.
“We need stronger collaboration with the Federal Government to equip our fire service with modern technology capable of responding swiftly to emergencies of this scale,” Yusuf said during the visit.
Commendation for Emergency Responders
Governor Yusuf commended the swift intervention of the Kano State Fire Service and other emergency agencies whose efforts helped contain the inferno and prevent wider destruction.
Emergency responders reportedly battled the flames for several hours before bringing the situation under control. While the full extent of damage is still being assessed, traders in the affected Gidan Gilas section suffered significant losses.
Authorities have not yet confirmed the cause of the fire, but investigations are expected to determine whether electrical faults, negligence, or other factors were responsible.
Growing Concerns Over Market Safety
The recurring fires at Singer Market have renewed concerns among traders and residents about fire safety standards in major commercial centres across Kano State. Market unions and business owners are increasingly calling for improved preventive measures, including:
Installation of functional fire alarms
Regular electrical safety inspections
Deployment of additional fire stations near major markets
Public awareness on fire prevention
Analysts say the governor’s appeal aligns with broader national concerns over inadequate emergency infrastructure in densely populated commercial zones.
Federal Response Awaited
As of press time, the Federal Government had not issued an official response to the request. However, stakeholders note that improved federal state collaboration will be crucial in addressing persistent urban fire risks in Nigeria’s major trading hubs.
Sele Media Africa will continue to monitor developments, including the outcome of the ongoing investigation and any federal intervention.
