
Judiciary Making Strides in Restoring Public Confidence — CJN Kekere‑Ekun!

Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Kudirat Kekere‑Ekun, has affirmed that the judiciary has made notable progress in restoring public trust, while also acknowledging the persistent challenges that continue to erode confidence in the system.
Speaking at the opening of the 2025 Hybrid Refresher Course for judges of superior courts, Kekere‑Ekun admitted that despite ongoing reforms, serious concerns such as corruption, delays in justice delivery, and perceptions of bias or inefficiency remain deeply problematic. [1]
“In spite of our collective efforts, challenges persist; allegations of corruption, delays in the dispensation of justice, and perceptions of bias or inefficiency remain issues of concern,” she asserted. [2]
She warned that such issues not only weaken the judiciary’s authority but also contribute to a dangerous gulf between the courts and the society they serve. [3] She emphasized that without public confidence, the judiciary’s moral authority is diminished, and its ability to discharge its constitutional mandate is undermined. [4]
Kekere‑Ekun also urged judicial officers to do more than be impartial — they must be seen to be impartial. She cautioned that the perception of bias or impropriety can be as damaging as actual wrongdoing. [5]
