Jonathan’s Camp, PDP Topshots Wooing Peter Obi Ahead of 2027 Elections
As Nigeria approaches the 2027 general elections, internal dynamics within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have intensified, with prominent figures and factions actively seeking to bring back former Anambra State governor and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, into the party’s fold.
Sources within the PDP indicate that allies of former President Goodluck Jonathan are engaging in strategic discussions to persuade Obi to return to the party. A senior party member revealed, “Many want Jonathan because he is easy to sell nationwide and has only one term left, which the North will find acceptable, but Wike’s men are against him. They are pushing Obi instead to block Jonathan” [1] .
The PDP’s Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Ibrahim Abdullahi, publicly acknowledged the party’s efforts to woo Obi back, describing him as a “great political capital” and a significant asset to any party. Abdullahi stated, “Peter Obi is our product and the PDP indeed wants to get him back” [2] .
However, not all within the PDP are in favor of Obi’s return. Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, expressed strong opposition, stating, “Bringing Obi back to the PDP would further erode the party’s credibility and destroy any remaining ideological foundation” [3] .
Obi, who left the PDP in 2022 to join the Labour Party, garnered over six million votes in the 2023 presidential election, winning 12 states, including the Federal Capital Territory. His performance has positioned him as a formidable political figure ahead of the 2027 elections.
The ongoing efforts to bring Obi back into the PDP highlight the party’s strategic maneuvers to consolidate support and present a united front in the upcoming elections. As internal debates continue, the PDP faces the challenge of balancing diverse interests to strengthen its position against the ruling party.
