Jonathan: “Politics in Nigeria is Fraught with Betrayals”

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has candidly described Nigerian politics as being rife with betrayals, reflecting on his experiences during the 2015 general elections. Speaking at the 70th birthday celebration of his former Chief of Staff, Chief Mike Aiyegbeni Oghiadomhe, in Benin City, Edo State, Jonathan expressed his disillusionment with the political landscape.

“Politics in the Nigerian standard is about betrayals,” Jonathan remarked. “I have witnessed a lot of betrayal during the 2015 election. You will find it difficult to see somebody who says the same thing in the morning, in the afternoon, and in the evening.” [1]

Jonathan highlighted Oghiadomhe as one of the few politicians who remained steadfast and loyal during turbulent times, contrasting him with others who shifted allegiances. “Oghiadomhe is one of the few friends I have who can stick out their necks for me,” he noted. [2]
The former president’s comments come amid ongoing speculation about his potential return to politics ahead of the 2027 elections. While some factions within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have expressed interest in his candidacy, Jonathan has not confirmed any intentions to re-enter the political arena. [2]

Jonathan’s reflections underscore the challenges of political consistency and loyalty in Nigeria, shedding light on the complexities of governance and party dynamics in the country.
