“It’s About Talent, Not Fine Faces” – Kanayo O. Kanayo Criticizes YouTube Nollywood Trend
Veteran Nollywood actor Kanayo O. Kanayo has expressed concerns over the growing trend of prioritizing appearance over talent in Nigeria’s burgeoning YouTube film scene. In a candid video shared on his Instagram page in April 2024, Kanayo lamented the industry’s shift towards superficiality, emphasizing that true acting prowess should take precedence over physical attractiveness.
Kanayo specifically criticized the practice of intense one-day shoots prevalent among emerging YouTube actors, describing it as detrimental to professionalism and long-term sustainability. He noted that such demanding working conditions could adversely affect actors’ health and compromise the quality of productions. [1]
Highlighting the lack of foresight among some Nigerian actors who prioritize short-term gains over sustainable practices, Kanayo warned that the current trajectory could undermine the industry’s credibility. He emphasized the need for a return to core values that prioritize talent, discipline, and dedication. [2]
Kanayo also addressed the issue of unrealistic portrayals in Nollywood films, cautioning filmmakers against misleading costumes and makeup. He pointed out that many productions depict characters in ways that do not align with real-life scenarios, such as wealthy individuals constantly dressed in traditional attire or women sleeping with full makeup. He urged his colleagues to strive for authenticity to enhance the industry’s credibility. [3]
As Nollywood continues to evolve, Kanayo’s insights serve as a reminder of the importance of maintaining professional standards and focusing on genuine talent. His call to action encourages stakeholders to reflect on the industry’s direction and prioritize quality over quantity.
