Israeli Strikes Undermine Efforts to Prevent Escalation — Lebanese President Aoun

BEIRUT, LEBANON —Lebanese President Joseph Aoun has strongly condemned a series of recent Israeli airstrikes across southern and eastern Lebanon, warning that the attacks undermine local, regional and international efforts to prevent further escalation of hostilities in the already fragile Middle East. Aoun’s remarks come amid renewed tensions despite a U.S.‑brokered ceasefire that has been in place since late 2024. [1]In a statement issued on Tuesday, Aoun criticised the timing of the strikes, saying they appeared aimed at “foiling all efforts” to uphold the ceasefire mechanisms and restore peace. He noted that the attacks occurred ahead of key diplomatic talks involving the International Monitoring and Implementation Mechanism (IMIM) — a joint body comprising Lebanon, Israel and United Nations forces tasked with managing ceasefire terms and addressing violations. Aoun also urged the international community to intervene more decisively to curb the strikes and enable the ceasefire committee to carry out its peace‑building mandate.
The Israeli military says it targeted Hezbollah and Hamas infrastructure in areas including Sidon, the Bekaa Valley and other southern towns, asserting that it issued prior evacuation warnings before conducting the operations. However, Lebanese authorities argue that the continuation of such strikes — especially in civilian areas — risks undoing diplomatic progress and intensifying volatile tensions along the border, threatening broader instability in the region.
