Israeli Airstrike in Yemen Kills Houthi Prime Minister and Senior Officials

On August 30, 2025, an Israeli airstrike targeted a government facility in Sanaa, Yemen, resulting in the death of Ahmed al-Rahawi, the Prime Minister of the Houthi-led government, along with several senior ministers. This marks the first instance of an Israeli strike eliminating top-ranking officials of the Iranian-backed Houthi movement.

The attack occurred during a routine government workshop evaluating the administration’s annual performance. Other officials killed included ministers of energy, foreign affairs, and information. The Israeli military described the operation as a precision strike against a “Houthi terrorist regime military target.”

Al-Rahawi had served as Prime Minister since August 2024, following his appointment by Houthi leader Mahdi al-Mashat. His death is considered a significant blow to the Houthi leadership amid escalating tensions in the region.

The Houthis have been actively involved in the regional conflict, launching missiles and drones towards Israel and targeting ships in the Red Sea, actions they claim are in solidarity with Palestinians. In response, Israel has intensified its military operations against Houthi-controlled areas in Yemen.

Following the strike, Houthi officials vowed retaliation, stating that Israeli attacks would not deter their support for Palestinians. The situation remains volatile, with potential implications for broader regional stability.
