Imo Begins Payment of ₦104,000 Minimum Wage to Workers!
Reported by David Joshua | Sele Media Africa
The Imo State Government has commenced the payment of a new minimum wage of ₦104,000 to its civil servants, marking a significant boost in workers’ welfare and fulfilling Governor Hope Uzodimma’s earlier promise to review salaries upward.
The announcement was made on Saturday through a statement by the state’s Head of Service, Raymond Ucheoma, who confirmed that the new wage structure took effect from the September salary cycle.
“This administration is committed to improving the welfare of workers and aligning compensation with current economic realities,” Ucheoma said. “The ₦104,000 minimum wage is now being paid and reflects Governor Uzodimma’s resolve to protect workers’ interests.”
The wage increase comes amid growing national demands for salary adjustments in the face of rising inflation and economic challenges. It places Imo among the few Nigerian states implementing a wage above the national minimum standard.
Labour unions in the state have applauded the move, calling it a “bold step” towards restoring dignity to public service. However, they urged the government to ensure sustainability and timely disbursement.
This development may put pressure on other state governments to follow suit as calls for a nationwide minimum wage review intensify.
