IG Urges Police Lawyers to Defend the Force with Professionalism and Integrity
Reported by David Joshua | Sele Media Africa
Inspector‑General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has called on police officers serving as lawyers to bring professionalism, courage, and integrity into their roles when defending the Nigeria Police Force in courts.
During a workshop on capacity building for the Police Legal Department held in Abuja, the IG emphasized that legal officers must represent the Force in a manner consistent with human rights principles and uphold public trust. [1]
He noted that as defenders in court, these lawyers are often the face of the police in the judicial system, and their ethical conduct can either strengthen or weaken the institution’s reputation. [1]
The legal workshop, which spans two days, is part of a broader initiative to instill human rights-based policing, improve oversight, and ensure accountability within the Force. [1]
Egbetokun also lauded the collaboration between the Nigeria Police and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) for supporting training and expanding oversight mechanisms.
This call aligns with the IG’s earlier admonitions to police officers broadly to act with diligence, fairness, and restraint in their duties. [2]
