Abuja โ The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has issued a strong warning to those advocating for former President Goodluck Jonathan to contest the 2027 presidential election, saying such calls are โlooking for crisis.โ [1]
Speaking on Channels Televisionโs Politics Today, Wike described the push for Jonathanโs return as not only insincere, but dangerous. According to him, many of the people urging Jonathan had previously worked against himโespecially during the 2015 presidential raceโand are now trying to draw him back into active politics as political pawns. [1]
โ โAnybody saying Jonathan should return because he will only do one term is only looking for crisis,โ Wike said. โThese are the same people who abandoned him in 2015. Why now?โ [1]
He urged Jonathan to continue maintaining his image as a statesman rather than being dragged into a contest that Wike believes is orchestrated to destabilise the political equilibrium. [2]
โ๏ธ Key Takeaways
โขโ โ Wike recalled the betrayal Jonathan faced in 2015 and questioned the motive of those now calling for his return. [2]โขโ โ He warned against any Southern candidate being fronted under the guise of a oneโterm presidency, stating that such moves are hypocritical and potentially destabilising. [1]
โขโ โ Wike also acknowledged current economic hardships under the Tinubu administration but defended the governmentโs policies, insisting tough decisions are being made to reposition the economy. [1]
Why This Matters
Nigeria is heading towards a highly contested election season with simmering tensions within political parties. Efforts to bring back a former president could either unite or divide, depending on how theyโre handled. Wikeโs warning suggests major instability could follow if political actors use Jonathanโs name or reputation without genuine strategic intent.
For now, Jonathan has not confirmed any intention to run. But the debate around his possible candidacy continues to stir emotions in both political circles and the general public.
