How UNILAG Final Year Student Drowned in Lagos Beach — Eyewitness Debunks Backflip Claims!
Reported by Marian opeyemi Fasesan
Contrary to viral reports circulating online, fresh details have emerged about the tragic drowning of Damilola Balogun, a 400-level student of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), who lost his life during an outing at a beach in Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos State.
Initial claims on social media alleged that the student died while attempting a backflip. However, eyewitness accounts and multiple sources suggest otherwise.
According to a report by PUNCH Metro, Damilola, who was studying in the Department of Education, was swept away by a sudden surge of ocean currents while in the water with friends.
“He wasn’t doing any stunts,” said a fellow student who was present. “They were just enjoying themselves at the beach when the waves suddenly became strong and pulled him in. Before help could reach, it was too late.”
Damilola was said to be on a post-exam hangout with friends when the incident occurred. His body was recovered hours later by local divers.
UNILAG has not issued an official statement as of the time of this report, but sources within the student union have expressed grief over the loss and called for improved safety measures at popular beach locations frequented by students.
This incident raises renewed concerns about unregulated public beaches in Lagos, many of which lack adequate lifeguards, warning signs, and emergency response mechanisms.
Sele Media Africa urges relevant authorities to enforce beach safety standards and create awareness to prevent further tragedies.
