Historic Coronation: Oba Ladoja Becomes 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland

Ibadan — A momentous chapter opens in Ibadan’s traditional history as Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja is set to be crowned the 44th Olubadan of Ibadan land on Friday, 26 September 2025, at the venerable Mapo Hall. This announcement follows his nomination by the Olubadan‑in‑Council and approval by Governor Seyi Makinde. The coronation committee, chaired by former Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes (CCII) President Chief Bayo Oyero, unveiled a week‑long celebration leading to the big day. Events include an interdenominational service at the Olubadan Palace, a Cultural Day, a Coronation Lecture by renowned historian Prof. Toyin Falola, and a Mega Praise Worship in Idi Ape. To accommodate the influx of dignitaries and well‑wishers, traffic diversions have been put in place around Mapo Hall, starting 7:00 a.m. on coronation day, with designated parking zones and shuttle services available. The Babaloja of Oyo State issued directives for all markets across the 11 Ibadan local governments to shut down in honor of the coronation. Oba Ladoja’s elevation comes after a respectful mourning period following the death of the 43rd Olubadan, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, who passed away on 7 July 2025, just days after celebrating his 90th birthday. Ladoja’s enthronement is seen by many as a bridge between modern governance and traditional values, given his long record in politics, business, and public service. Ibadan indigenes and elites have rallied to support the coronation, with some donating up to ₦10 million each to ensure the event befits the stature of the new monarch.
