JOS, PLATEAU STATE — Gunmen on Tuesday night attacked herders around the Gero community in Jos South Local Government Area, killing one herder and injuring another in a violent assault that has heightened insecurity concerns in the region. The incident was confirmed by the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN), which urged authorities to thoroughly investigate the attack and called for calm among pastoral communities. According to MACBAN state chairman Ibrahim Yusuf Babayo, the victim, identified as Zakariya Abdullahi, was killed while another herder, Jibrin Musa, sustained critical injuries during the attack on the outskirts of Gero. The herders were reportedly returning to their cattle shed when the gunmen opened fire around 8:00 p.m. on January 6, 2026, underscoring ongoing security challenges facing pastoralists in Plateau State. [2]The association lamented the frequency of such violent episodes and urged security agencies to intensify protection for herders and their livestock. Herding communities in the state have repeatedly faced ambushes, shootings, and reprisal attacks in recent months, leading to loss of lives and property and deepening fears amid growing cycles of rural violence.
