Gridlock: Lagos State Traffic Management Authority Saves Over ₦430 Billion Annually from Man‑Hour Loss — Giwa!
Reported by David Joshua | Sele Media Africa
The Lagos State Government, through its Special Adviser on Transportation, Sola Giwa, has revealed that the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) helps the state avert economic losses exceeding ₦430 billion annually by managing traffic congestion and gridlock on major roads. [1]
Giwa explained that each of the over 4,100 LASTMA officers deployed across the state contributes significantly toward productivity preservation. He stated that at an estimated ₦85 million saved per officer per year, the cumulative savings support Lagos’s gross domestic product (GDP) of approximately ₦41 trillion. [2]
The figure was disclosed during the 2025 “Ember Months” safety campaign flag‑off held at LASTMA’s headquarters in Oshodi, highlighting the agency’s expanded operations including 24/7 traffic monitoring, rapid‑response teams and technology‑driven enforcement. [3]
Giwa emphasised that “every hour recovered from gridlock is an hour returned to productivity; every accident prevented is a life preserved,” underscoring LASTMA’s role not only in traffic management but also economic and human‑value preservation. [1]
Analysts say while the ₦430 billion savings reflect meaningful progress, traffic congestion in Lagos remains a major challenge, with residents still estimated to lose up to ₦1 trillion annually in productivity due to gridlock. [4]
