Gov. Ganduje Moves to Grant Autonomy to Kano Local Governments
Kano State Governor, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, has taken significant steps toward granting autonomy to the local government areas (LGAs) in Kano State. The move aligns with ongoing calls across Nigeria for decentralization and increased local governance powers to improve service delivery and accountability at the grassroots level.
Governor Ganduje, during a recent meeting with local government chairmen and stakeholders, expressed his commitment to ensuring that the LGAs in Kano operate with greater financial and administrative independence. This initiative is expected to empower local governments to better manage resources, plan development projects, and respond more efficiently to community needs.
This decision follows increasing pressure from various state and local actors nationwide demanding the full implementation of local government autonomy, as enshrined in the Nigerian Constitution but yet to be fully realized in many states.
The Kano government is reportedly working with the state House of Assembly to pass necessary legislative amendments that will pave the way for the autonomy of LGAs. The governor emphasized that this reform aims to boost transparency, reduce bureaucratic bottlenecks, and enhance grassroots participation in governance.
This development is welcomed by many political analysts who see local government autonomy as a critical step toward strengthening democracy and accelerating development in Nigeria’s federating units.
