Ghana has formally agreed to accept West African nationals being deported from the United States under an unfolding migration arrangement, President John Dramani Mahama has announced.[1]
President Mahama stated that 14 individuals, mostly Nigerians and one Gambian, have already been received in Ghana. While Ghana is facilitating their return home, no upper limit has been placed on how many will be accepted in the future.[1]
Mahama explained that the decision is enabled by the ECOWAS protocol on free movement — West African nationals are not required to have visas to enter Ghana — making the acceptance of these deportees less complicated administratively.[2]
However, the move has been subject to legal scrutiny and concern. A U.S. judge has raised questions about whether sending migrants to third countries like Ghana — especially when they face risk in their home countries — may violate international protections.[3]
