Germany, EU Unveil Initiative to Tackle Gas Flaring in Nigeria!

Reported by Marian Opeyemi Fasesan | Sele Media Africa

As part of 2025’s Green Diplomacy Week, the European Union and the German Embassy in Nigeria have jointly launched the German–Nigerian Flare4Value Project — a major initiative to combat gas flaring and promote cleaner, more sustainable energy in Nigeria.

About the Initiative:

  • The Flare4Value project aims to reduce harmful gas flaring by converting wasted gas into valuable energy resources.
  • It is designed to support Nigeria’s commitments to climate action under the Paris Agreement and improve energy efficiency.
  • The initiative also seeks to create jobs, attract green investment, and support local innovation in the energy sector.

Key Objectives:

  • Reduce greenhouse gas emissions linked to oil production.
  • Promote gas capture, reprocessing, and commercial use.
  • Build technical capacity and regulatory frameworks for flare reduction.

Why It Matters:

  • Nigeria is one of the top gas-flaring nations globally — a major environmental and economic concern.
  • This project signals growing international collaboration to help Nigeria transition to a low-carbon economy.
  • It also aligns with EU–Africa climate partnerships focused on clean energy, resilience, and sustainability.
