FUPRE Students Barricade East‑West Road Over Alleged Tuition Hike

Students of the Federal University of Petroleum Resources, Effurun (FUPRE), in Uvwie LGA, Delta State, disrupted traffic along the busy East‑West Road and blocked all access routes to their campus in protest of what they described as a sudden and unfair increase in tuition fees.

The protest, which began early Tuesday morning, saw dozens of students gathering with placards and chanting slogans demanding that FUPRE’s management reverse the hike. Many accused the university authorities of implementing the fee hike without stakeholder consultation, leaving many students unable to pay.

According to eyewitnesses, motorists were held up for hours as the blockade caused severe gridlock along the major junctions linking the South‑South and South‑East regions. The students also locked the campus gates to prevent staff movement.
A version of this same protest was reported back in January 2015 when FUPRE students had similarly barricaded the East‑West Road over a fee increase from ~N26,400 to ~N40,000 for returning students, along with increased accommodation charges. [1]

University management has remained mostly silent at the time of reporting. However, the Acting Registrar, Amiso Iniowuari, had previously defended fee adjustments as necessary for infrastructural upkeep and running costs. [2]

As of now, no arrest has been confirmed. The protest remains ongoing, with students warning that they will not relent until their demands are met.
