Koroma/Saakpenwa, Rivers State, Nigeria โ The Federal University of Environment and Technology (FUET) in Ogoniland has celebrated a historic milestone with its first-ever matriculation ceremony, taking place on Tuesday, February 3, 2026, just about one month after lectures commenced for the 2025/2026 academic session.
The ceremony formally welcomed 1,004 pioneer students into FUET โ marking the official academic induction of the first cohort since the universityโs establishment.
The university, located in Koroma and Saakpenwa communities of Tai Local Government Area, Rivers State, was signed into law by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on February 3, 2025, and is the first federal university ever established in Ogoniland with a specialised focus on environmental restoration, sustainable development, and technology.
At the matriculation, students were formally sworn in and received their academic gowns โ a symbolic rite of passage into university life. The event also coincided with the universityโs Foundersโ Week celebrations, featuring a packed programme of activities including thanksgiving services and a parade, reflecting the institutionโs aspirations for academic excellence and community engagement.
ViceโChancellor Professor Chinedu Mmom described the matriculation as a defining moment for FUET, Ogoniland, and the entire Niger Delta region, signaling the universityโs readiness to deliver on its mandate of producing graduates equipped to address environmental and technological challenges.
The pioneer students are enrolled across six faculties โ including Agriculture, Allied Health Sciences, Engineering Technology, Environmental Sciences, Natural and Applied Sciences, and Management Technology โ that aim to combine academic rigour with practical skills for sustainable solutions.
Photos from the ceremony captured proud moments of students in their matriculation gowns, faculty officials, and community leaders witnessing this historic milestone โ underscoring the optimism and momentum surrounding FUETโs early journey.
