“Fubara: ADC Says Tinubu Playing God in Rivers”
Port Harcourt — The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has accused President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of overreaching his constitutional limits in Rivers State, describing recent actions around the suspension and reinstatement of Governor Siminalayi Fubara as “playing God.”
The ADC issued a critical statement on September 18, 2025, following the lifting of a six‑month emergency rule in Rivers State. In their view, Tinubu’s declaration of the emergency — which suspended elected officials including Governor Fubara, his deputy, and the State Assembly — and the abrupt reinstatement amount to treating elected leaders as though they are at the mercy of presidential whim rather than constitutional law. According to ADC’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, such actions “arrogate to the President the powers to suspend and recall elected officials … whimsically autocratic … a threat to our democracy.” [1] They argued that only a competent court of law has authority to remove or suspend an elected governor, not the president acting via proclamation. [1]The party further warned that using emergency powers under Section 305 of the Nigerian Constitution for what they see as political ends — rather than genuine emergencies like insurrection or natural disasters — sets a dangerous precedent.
