ENUGU, NIGERIA — November 1, 2025 —
The Kunie Foundation, a human rights and advocacy group based in Enugu, has once again called on Nigerian authorities to deliver justice in the long-standing case of Ochanya Ogbanje, the 13-year-old girl who tragically died in 2018 after suffering years of sexual abuse in Benue State.
Ochanya’s death, which resulted from complications linked to prolonged sexual assault, sparked nationwide outrage and brought attention to the disturbing prevalence of child abuse and the slow pace of justice in such cases.
In a statement released this week, Kunie Foundation criticized the delay in prosecuting the accused, despite the gravity of the crime and public outcry.
“Seven years later, justice remains painfully elusive. The system has failed Ochanya, and we cannot allow this silence to continue,” said the foundation’s director.
The group has vowed to intensify its advocacy and pressure key judicial and law enforcement bodies to reopen and pursue the case with urgency.
Ochanya was allegedly abused by her guardian and a relative while under their care, with one of the accused being a university lecturer. Civil society organizations have repeatedly condemned the legal delays, calling it a dangerous precedent that discourages victims and emboldens abusers.
The renewed demand from Kunie Foundation comes as Nigeria continues to grapple with a justice system often criticized for its inefficiency in handling gender-based violence.
Sele Media Africa will continue to monitor developments on this case.
