Businesswoman and philanthropist, Folorunso Alakija, in partnership with her husband, Modupe Alakija, has donated a major teaching hospital facility to the management of the Osun State University (UNIOSUN), Osogbo, in Osun State, Nigeria.
Donation details
The facility, described as a 250‑bed teaching hospital, was committed by Mrs Alakija in her capacity as Chancellor of Osun State University. [1]
In remarks made during the foundation‐laying ceremony, Mrs Alakija stated that the gesture was motivated “out of my love for children, mothers and indeed humanity” and aimed at improving access to timely, quality medical services in Nigeria. [2]
The hospital will include: community health units, maternity & neonatal services, research and diagnostic laboratories, operating theatres, advanced diagnostic imaging (CT‑scan, MRI, Ultrasound), X‑ray, radiotherapy suites, lecture rooms and other training facilities. [1]
Institutional context & impact
The university’s Vice‑Chancellor noted that with the new hospital facility the institution is well‑on‑track to producing world‑class medical doctors, as the teaching hospital addresses a key requirement for clinical training under the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN). [3]
- The facility complements existing infrastructure changes at the university, including its taking over of the former Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) Teaching Hospital in Osogbo—now renamed the UNIOSUN Teaching Hospital—which will operate alongside the new hospital project. [4]
Significance & next steps
This donation marks a significant investment in healthcare infrastructure and medical education in Osun State. It underscores Mrs Alakija’s philanthropic commitment to advancing education and healthcare, reinforcing her profile as a benefactor of tertiary institutions. [5]
The project is reported to be nearly complete (97 % at one point) and is expected to be handed over fully to the university for operation and management. [6]
Quote
“The hospital … will provide an avenue for medical excellence, job‐creation and bring relief to humanity.” — Folorunso Alakija [1]
Conclusion
With the formal hand‐over of the teaching hospital by Mrs Alakija and her family, Osun State University is set to enter a new era in medical training and service delivery—promising improved healthcare access for mothers and children, enhanced research capacity, and the preparation of medical professionals equipped for the future.
