Jos, Plateau State — A residential building was destroyed by fire on Wednesday morning, February 4, 2026, in the Gwarandok community of Jos South Local Government Area, Plateau State.
The fire reportedly started around 10:00 a.m. and spread rapidly across the building, consuming household belongings and leaving the occupants displaced.
Eyewitnesses said thick smoke was seen billowing from the house as the flames intensified, allegedly fueled by flammable materials inside the building. As of the time of filing this report, the exact cause of the fire remains unknown.
Although no casualties were recorded, residents expressed concern over the recurring issue of fire outbreaks and poor emergency preparedness within the community.
Locals attempted to contain the fire using buckets and other improvised means, but their efforts were unsuccessful due to acute water shortages in the area. Residents attributed the lack of water to an ongoing road construction project that reportedly damaged water pipelines and restricted access to nearby water sources.
Speaking on the incident, a resident, Jenifer Solomon, said the water shortage worsened the situation. “The absence of water turned what could have been a minor fire into a major disaster,” she said.
She appealed to Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, to intervene by ensuring the completion of the road project, which she claimed has been stalled for over a year, leading to the disconnection of water supply lines.
According to her, the Plateau State Fire Service was promptly alerted and responded with water tankers and firefighting equipment. The firefighters successfully contained the blaze and prevented it from spreading to neighboring houses.
Another resident, Mr. Adams Olayinka, also urged the government to expedite the completion of the road project, particularly ahead of the rainy Season.
