Lagos, Nigeria – September 17, 2025:
Panic gripped Broad Street in Lagos Island on Wednesday after a fire engulfed Afriland Tower, a six-storey commercial building that houses several corporate offices, including a branch of the United Bank for Africa (UBA).
According to the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, the fire started in the inverter room located in the basement of the tower and quickly spread upwards through the building. Eyewitnesses reported thick smoke billowing from the structure as workers and occupants scrambled for safety.
Firefighters from the Ebute Elefun and Sari Iganmu fire stations responded promptly to the distress call and worked tirelessly to contain the blaze.
While initial fears sparked rumours of casualties, official reports confirmed that no lives were lost, and no injuries have been formally reported as of press time. Emergency response teams ensured a swift evacuation of occupants and secured the area to prevent further escalation.
Business activities along Broad Street were disrupted as authorities cordoned off the affected zone. The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) and security agencies were also present to manage the situation.
Investigations into the cause of the fire are currently ongoing.
