Lagos, Nigeria — A devastating fire broke out in the early hours of Monday, December 16, 2025, at the Elegushi Model Market in Lekki, Lagos, destroying at least 48 shops and causing losses worth millions of naira.According to eyewitnesses, the blaze started around 3:00 a.m. and quickly spread through the market, fueled by flammable materials stored in the shops. Traders watched helplessly as their goods, mostly food items, electronics, fabrics, and household essentials, were consumed by the flames.The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service confirmed the incident, stating that its personnel responded promptly and were able to contain the inferno before it spread to adjoining buildings. However, by the time the fire was subdued, several structures had already been reduced to ashes.Officials say investigations are ongoing to determine the cause of the fire, though some traders suspect an electrical fault.Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) officials were also on-site to assess the damage and support affected victims.
