FG to Introduce Mandatory Vehicle Recycling Fee from 2026
Reported by Sele Media Africa|Ihuoma Amarachi
The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced plans to introduce a mandatory vehicle recycling fee starting from 2026, as part of efforts to formalize the countryโs auto industry and improve environmental standards.According to the Director General of the National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC), Joseph Osanipin, the initiative will be integrated into the vehicle importation and registration process. The policy aims to generate over N150 billion annually, while creating thousands of jobs across the recycling and automotive value chains.Osanipin noted that Nigeria currently lacks a structured vehicle end-of-life management system, which contributes to environmental hazards and road safety risks.
The recycling fee will fund the development of infrastructure and systems for safe dismantling, reuse, and disposal of obsolete vehicles. He emphasized that stakeholders, including importers, dealers, and recyclers, will be carried along in policy formulation, and consultations are ongoing with relevant ministries and industry players. The move aligns with global best practices, where countries like Germany, Japan, and South Korea enforce extended producer responsibility (EPR) policies to ensure sustainable vehicle lifecycle management.
