Reported by Marian Opeyemi Fasesan | Sele Media Africa
The Federal Government of Nigeria is in advanced discussions with China’s Export-Import Bank for a2 billion loan to finance the construction of a new electricity “super grid” aimed at resolving the country’s chronic power supply problems.
Project Goals:
- The proposed super grid is intended to boost power transmission capacity, integrate renewable energy, and reduce nationwide blackouts.
- The grid will span thousands of kilometers, with state-of-the-art infrastructure linking generation stations to urban and rural distribution networks.
- The Ministry of Power says the grid will also enhance regional power trade under the West African Power Pool framework.
What the FG Says:
- Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, said the loan talks are progressing positively, and the government is optimistic about financial closure before mid-2026.
- He emphasized that reliable electricity is crucial for industrialization, digital growth, and national security.
Why It Matters:
- Nigeria currently generates around 4,000–5,000 MW for over 200 million people—far below demand.
- The outdated national grid is prone to frequent collapse, with over 140 recorded since 2010.
- A functional super grid could attract investors, create jobs, and significantly improve quality of life.
