Abuja — The Federal Government, through the Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria (ARCON), has issued a stern warning to the public over a fake AI‑generated advertisement circulating online, using the image and video of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The advert reportedly promotes an investment scheme—described as a Ponzi scheme—but has no official approval or endorsement. [1]
What the Government Says
- In an official statement, ARCON’s Director‑General, Dr. Olalekan Fadolapo, confirmed that the ad was neither vetted nor approved by the Advertising Standards Panel (ASP), as required under the Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria Act No. 23 of 2022. [2]
- The advertisement, which surfaced on Facebook, falsely uses Tinubu’s image and voice to solicit investments. The government warned that such acts constitute violation of the 2022 ARCON Act and can attract legal sanctions. [1]
- ARCON emphasized that the President did not model for, or authorize anyone to use his image in connection with the scheme. The Council urged Nigerians to disregard the advertisement and be vigilant against similar fraudulent acts. [2]
Broader Context & Risks
- This is not the first time that AI‑generated content has been misused in Nigeria. Reports show rising concerns over deepfake and synthetic media. being used to misinform, manipulate perceptions, or hijack trusted public figures’ reputations. [3]
- The Federal Government has earlier cautioned against misuse of AI to spread deepfake videos targeting public officials, noting that such tools can dangerously distort truth and undermine public trust. [3]
- ARCON has also declared a crackdown on fake adverts, pledging stricter enforcement to protect consumers and maintain integrity in the advertising space. [4]
