FG Orders Rescue, Vows Crackdown on Illegal Miners After Zamfara Pit Collapse!
Reported by David Joshua | Sele Media Africa
The Federal Government has ordered an immediate rescue operation and pledged a nationwide crackdown on illegal mining activities after the collapse of a mining pit in Kadauri village, Maru LGA, Zamfara State, left 13 people dead and two still missing.
The incident, which occurred earlier this week, has sparked fresh outrage over the dangers of unregulated mining across Nigeria. Authorities say search and rescue operations are still ongoing, while investigations into the cause of the collapse have commenced.
In a statement on Sunday, the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake, described the event as tragic and avoidable. He stressed that the government would not tolerate reckless mining practices and vowed that illegal operators would be fished out and prosecuted.
He also reaffirmed the FG’s commitment to formalising artisanal mining and enhancing safety regulations.
Zamfara, a state rich in gold and other minerals, has seen repeated tragedies linked to illegal mining and armed banditry.
