FG Moves to Deliver Passports in 1 Week, Completes Centralized Personalization Centre
The Federal Government of Nigeria has unveiled a major reform in the passport issuance system, promising delivery of passports within one week of application, following the commissioning of a new Centralized Personalization Centre. [1]
Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji‑Ojo termed the new facility at the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) headquarters in Abuja a “game‑changer” in the nation’s passport production. He said passports will be printed within 24 hours and delivered to applicants within seven days. [1]
Key features of the reform include:
• A shift from using about 96 personalization centres across Nigeria and abroad to a single centralized facility for passport personalization, in order to enhance efficiency and reduce vulnerabilities. [1]
• Increased productivity: the new centre reportedly produces about 1,000 passports per hour, meaning between 4,500 and 5,000 passports can be produced in a normal workday. [1]
• Vetting of applicants will be completed within 24 hours, giving approved applicants the passport printed and ready soon after. [1]The move is part of a broader effort by the Ministry of Interior and Nigeria Immigration Service to eliminate the backlog of over 200,000 outstanding passport applications and to reduce instances of extortion and delay in the old system.
