FG Awards TeenEagle Global Champion Nafisah Abdullahi N200,000 — Sparks Mixed Reactions

The Federal Government of Nigeria has awarded Nafisah Abdullahi, the Nigerian teenager who emerged as the global champion at the prestigious TeenEagle International Competition, a cash prize of N200,000.

The award was presented by the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, during an official recognition ceremony held in Abuja on Thursday, celebrating Nafisah’s outstanding academic achievement on the world stage.

While the gesture has been applauded by some, it has also sparked criticism and debate online, with many Nigerians questioning the size of the reward. Critics argue that for a global victory that brought pride to the nation, the sum of N200,000 — roughly $130 — seems underwhelming and does not reflect the magnitude of Nafisah’s accomplishment.

Nafisah Abdullahi’s win has placed Nigeria in the spotlight among participating countries in the international competition, making her a symbol of academic excellence and youthful brilliance.

Many have called on both public and private sectors to do more in encouraging and rewarding young talents, especially those representing Nigeria globally.
