FCTA Offers Gas Cylinders, Free Refills to 5,000 Households in Clean Air Push!

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has flagged off its “Breathe Clean Air Initiative,” a clean energy campaign aimed at reducing indoor air pollution and promoting safer cooking practices in Abuja.
Under the programme, 5,000 households across the six area councils will receive free LPG (cooking gas) cylinders and six months’ worth of free refills.
“This initiative is about saving lives, protecting the environment, and easing the economic burden on vulnerable families,” said Dr. Mariya Mahmoud, FCT Minister of State, during the launch.
Key Details:
- The initiative targets low-income homes, particularly those relying on firewood and charcoal.
- Distribution will be handled through community-based cooperatives and women’s groups.
- Health officials estimate thousands suffer respiratory issues yearly due to smoke inhalation from unsafe cooking methods.
Why It Matters:
- The use of clean cooking fuels reduces the risk of respiratory illnesses, especially among women and children.
- It supports Nigeria’s broader energy transition goals and climate action commitments.
- The economic relief from free gas supply could improve household welfare in poor communities.
What to Watch:
- Expansion of the programme to other urban and rural communities.
- Impact assessments on public health and environmental benefits.
- Private sector partnerships to sustain the refilling subsidy.
