Ex-Borno Gov Denies Accusing Shettima of Creating Boko Haram!
Reported By Marian Opeyemi Fasesan | Sele Media Africa
Former Borno State Governor, Senator Ali-Modu Sheriff, has denied ever accusing Vice President Kashim Shettima of founding Boko Haram, dismissing a viral publication circulating on social media as “completely false and politically motivated.”
In a statement released on Saturday by his media office, Sheriff described the report as a deliberate attempt to sow discord in the North-East and damage his long-standing relationship with Shettima.
“At no time did I make such an allegation. Those peddling this falsehood are only trying to exploit our region’s tragic history for selfish political ends,” Sheriff said.
Key Points:
- The viral claim had alleged that Sheriff linked Shettima to the origins of Boko Haram during a private conversation.
- Sheriff insisted the statement was fabricated and aimed at reviving old political rivalries in Borno State.
- He reaffirmed his support for peacebuilding efforts in the North-East and called for unity among political leaders.
Why It Matters:
- The denial comes amid growing political tension in the region ahead of 2027 general elections.
- It underscores the continued weaponization of the Boko Haram narrative in Nigeria’s political space.
- Public clarification may help quell misinformation and prevent further polarization.
