The government of Enugu State has once again demolished a structure allegedly used by kidnappers as a hideout for detaining victims and negotiating ransom. The property, located in Amaebo Owelli Autonomous Community, Awgu Local Government Area, was razed in an operation led by the Enugu Capital Territory Development Authority (ECTDA). [1]
According to the ECTDA Chairman, Uche Anya, the building was tracked following intelligence received that armed criminals were using it to hold victims. The site reportedly contained arms, ammunition and underground holding cells. [2]
The demolition is being carried out under Section 315 (Second Amendment) of the Criminal Code Law, Cap. 30, Laws of Enugu State, which mandates the forfeiture or demolition of buildings used for kidnapping. [3]
The government stressed that landlords and property owners must perform due diligence on tenants and warned: “There is no hiding place for violent criminals in Enugu State.” [1]
Governor Peter Mbah’s administration continues its campaign against kidnapping and criminal hideouts, signalling to perpetrators that their bases will be dismantled. [4]
